Business Detail
Vulcan is conveniently located 120 Km South- East of Calgary and 100 Km North-west of Lethbridge on Highway 23.Vulcan is a progressive town of approximately 1762 people. It is primarily an agricultural community. However, Vulcan has been host to some strange and interesting encounters.
In 1910 the Canadian Pacific Railway grade was laid and the Vulcan town site was surveyed. By the time the first grain elevator had been built and the first train had arrived in 1911, Vulcan had a population of 28 and more than 14 thriving businesses. Just two years later the population of Vulcan had grown to nearly 500, more than 40 businesses were thriving, and Vulcan was able to incorporate as a village.
By 1921, Vulcan was able to claim town status, which still exists to this day. Vulcan quickly became famous for itâs â nine in a Lineâ, nine elevators able to store more than 750,000 bushels of grain. Pictures of these elevators were published in newspapers, national magazines, and on calendars everywhere. Vulcanâs âNine in a Lineâ boasted the greatest grain storage capacity in Canada until a disastrous fire in 1971. Todayâs agriculture related business remains the townâs biggest employer, with more than 1700 people calling Vulcan home.
The Vulcan & District Historical Society takes pride in showing the locals and tourists the wonderful display of the History on Vulcan and Area. The Vulcan & District Museum offers a look at our past in terms of communication, heritage and medical. Explore our picture gallery featuring the John Ware family. Visit Prospect Slope school to bring back memories of rural education in the 1920âs. This attraction is both educational and informative. A must see while in Vulcan!
Vulcan and area is also home to a flight instructor school. The Vulcan Aerodrome opened in 1942 and was home to the No. 2 Flight Instructor school. Later the No.19 Flight Instructor School was operated here.
The Vulcan Tourism & Trek Station is out of this world. As you enter you will be greeted by the Captain and the friendly crew. The crew members will be on hand to answer any questions about the Station as well as the Town of Vulcan and Vulcan County. There is a wide selection of brochures and maps that will help any visitors along their journey.
While in the Station be sure to bring along your camera. The Cast of Star Trek will be waiting for you on the main bridge of the Star Ship Enterprise, a perfect photo opportunity. The mountains and craters of the planet Vulcan will give you the feeling of being in another world.
While on vacation visit our Cyber Station to check your e-mail, send a Vulcan postcard online, or let your friends and family know how you are doing.
