Ladysmith is a town located on the 49th parallel on the east coast of Vancouver Island British Columbia, Canada. The local economy is based on forestry, tourism and agriculture. A hillside location adjacent to a sheltered harbour form the natural characteristics of the community.As of 2006 the population was 7,538. The area of the town was 8.43 square kilometres. Total private dwellings were 2,833. Population density was 828.5 people per square kilometre.
The Town of Ladysmith supports enhanced economic development efforts and works cooperatively with local industry to continue to grow the local economy. To guide and facilitate these efforts, the Town established the Ladysmith Economic Development Commission in 2005. The Commission's prime mandate is to provide leadership to diversify and grow the Ladysmith economy and achieve a sustainable community. Ladysmith is also known for its annual "Festival of Lights" in which the entire commercial sector and many homes are decorated with strings of colourful lights for six weeks in celebration of Christmas. A 2003 National Communities In Bloom award winner, Ladysmith offers world-class outdoor recreational opportunities; a renowned trail system through picturesque forests; first-class shopping and dining in the historic downtown area; and fun-filled waterfront activities at pristine Transfer Beach. Ladysmith is known for its abundance of community spirit - share in the excitement at any one of our legendary annual celebrations, such as the Festival of Lights beginning on the last Thursday of November or Ladysmith Days during the B.C. Day long weekend in August.
