Cobourg (2006 population 18,210) is a town in the Canadian province of Ontario, located 110km east of Toronto. It is the largest town in Northumberland County.Year-round, Cobourg celebrates its vibrant arts community with festivals, theatre and musical groups, and a variety of touring companies and solo artists. The historic Victoria Hall Concert Hall is a magnificent venue for taking in a show or touring the Art Gallery of Northumberland. Church sanctuaries and inns also provide a theatrical backdrop to entertainment. In the summer, bring your lawnchair to Victoria Park for shows at the bandshell, a hotspot for entertainment during the summer festival season and the long-standing Tuesday night date for the Concert Band of Cobourg.
In October, the Vintage Film Festival celebrates the silent and early talking film era of one of Cobourgâs most famous thespians, Marie Dressler. This 1920âs Hollywood starlet won an Oscar for her role in the 1931 movie âMin & Bill.â Her heritage home on the main street now houses a small museum of artifacts about her life.
An afternoon piano concert, an evening of musical theatre or a thought-provoking exhibit at the art gallery. Treating yourself to a show is a must, especially on vacation.
Cobourg is also home to the award-winning La Jeunesse Youth Choir and Orchestra which has competed on the international circuit, dinner theatre shows and live entertainment featured at local cafés.
Cobourg is called the âgem of Lake Ontarioâ for its fresh, healthy air, and is widely known for its marina, a gathering spot for boaters from throughout Ontario and across the lake from Rochester. There are play structures with slides and monkey bars, miniature golf and a snack bar for hot dogs and ice cream. Find a picnic spot in Victoria Park under the tree shade, where outdoor theatre, movie screenings and the music of the Concert Band of Cobourg fill the bandshell in the summer â all within a quick walk of historic downtown.
