Have you ever heard the call of the loon emerge from the mist of a crystal-clear lake? How about feeling the excitement of a 15 pound walleye tug the line from your reel?
Nothing compares with the soul-restoring benefits of nature's playground, and it's all here in French River. Here, the waters are pure and deep, and silent forests stretch for mile after unimpeded mile. Within minutes, you can flee the daily grind and be alone amidst some of the most beautiful scenery in Canada. Now that weâve grabbed your attention, here are the top 10 things to see and do right here in the French.
Canoeing
The French River is 105 km in length, running from headwaters at Lake Nipissing to its mouth at Georgian. Along this route are numerous campsites where paddlers and boaters will find opportunities for fishing, swimming, photography, or just relaxing. Paddlers can spend hours weaving through the braided channels. Maps are available at the French River Visitor Centre store.
Knights of Columbus Park/Beach
Swimming is always fun among our many lakes and rivers. This public beach is located on Highway 64 just outside of the town of Alban (between Turenne Road and the Alban Cemetery). This beach includes a shelter area and a picnic area, perfect for those hot summer days!
Snowmobiling
French River offers some of the best snowmobiling in North America. French River is the perfect destination for snowmobile enthusiasts and has an excellent trail system. In fact, Ontario has over 50,000 km (30,000 miles) of interconnected, groomed snowmobile trails forming the largest recreational trail system in the world. Throughout the trail system there are warm-up shelters and accommodations to add to the enjoyment.
Mashkinonje Park
Located off Highway 64, between Monetville and Lavigne, Mashkinonje Provincial Park consists of a diverse system of wetlands supporting all the major wetland types; swamps, marshes, bogs, fens and ponds; interspersed with undulating granite ridges that cover over 2000 hectares along the West Arm of Lake Nipissing. A combined group of community and educational partners have developed a system of hiking trails in the park to make the park features available to the public. There are 10 hiking trails in stacked loops totalling 10 kilometres throughout the whole park. For more information, please visit

French River Snowmobile Bridge
The completion of the French River Snowmobile Bridge has opened new opportunities for snowmobiles across the area and beyond. Not only does the bridge omit the need for snowmobiles to be shuttled by truck or trailer over the riversâ highway bridges, but they are an attraction themselves, architecturally.
The French River Snowmobile Bridge, completed September 2004, is 153.6 metres long and is 27 metres above the water. In the summer, this bridge is used as a crossing path for nature enthusiasts. The bridge itself is located on the West side of Highway 69 at the French River.
Hunting
The natural forestation and vegetation within the forest creates a home to several species of wildlife waiting to challenge the most experienced rifle or bow hunter or be captured by an adventurous photographer. French River is diverse in habitat but one thing remains constant â moose, deer and bear are common throughout.
Outfitters, lodge owners, professional guides and local trappers know this untamed wilderness well and are available to add to the experience.
Golfing
Enchanting surroundings and breathtaking scenery. Go golfing on some of the most beautiful terraces in Northern Ontario. The Municipality of French River has a total of five golf courses. To view the list of golf courses, along with other recreational references, please click here.
Fishing
Fishing the historic rivers and lakes within French River is guaranteed to give you a story to tell, and it wonât be about the one that got away!
Camping
French River has all of your camping needs, whether camping in the great outdoors to hunt that "trophy" or fishing for the "big one".
