Business Detail

Kapuskasing (population 8,509 in the Canada 2006 Census) is a town on the Kapuskasing River in the Cochrane District of northern Ontario, Canada, approximately 92 km (57 miles) east of Hearst. The town was known as MacPherson until 1917 when the name was changed so as not to conflict with another railway stop in Manitoba.

The former Spruce Falls, now Tembec, pulp and paper mill is the town's major employer. Another employer is the Agrium phosphate mine. General Motors Canada operates the GM Cold Weather Development Centre at Kapuskasing. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada operates an agricultural experiment station, or Experimental Farm, close to the town. TransCanada Pipelines Limited is another local player regularly infusing hard currency into the local economy as it expands its lines across the region. Hydroelectric power produced by the many unspoiled rivers is equally significant to Kapuskasing. Post secondary institutions in Kapuskasaing include: * Centre d'éducation Alternative High School (Adult Education)

* Collège Boréal à Kapuskasing

* Northern College of Applied Arts & Technology

* Université de Hearst à Kapuskasing

* D'Youville Academy (Religious, Closed) La Forge Jos Godin celebrates the history of Francophone culture in Kapuskasing. This unique centre, open to the public year round, offers a community hall and a gallery. The hall is available for rental and the gallery contains many historic artifacts. Housed in two passenger cars and a CNR 5107 Engine, the museum hosts a number of different exhibits pertaining to Kapuskasing and its history. Permanently on display is the museum's collection of trains and train memorabilia. The museum also highlights the creativity of Maurice Gaudreault, a local sculptor, in the "Our Living Heritage" exhibit. The museum is open for tours from May to September.

The Centre Régional de Loisirs is among the largest francophone cultural institutions in the North. Located in large modern facilities, the centre provides a wide variety of services including an art gallery, squash courts, a cardio gym, aerobics classes, as well as pottery, weaving and stained glass workshops. The main hall, which seats 500, is also available for public use.

The town of Kapuskasing manages nine parks and playgrounds, the largest of these being the Riverside Park. The Riverside Park is located at the heart of the town, bordering the Kapuskasing River. With its tennis courts, lawn bowling greens and children's water park, the Riverside Park is the jewel of the community. Special events, such as the Annual Lumberjack Heritage Festival, the Festival of Lights and many Winter Carnival activities, are held within its confines. Kapuskasing boasts a strong community atmosphere. The town's residents enjoy a peaceful life where children are safe, seniors are valued and businesses are supported. The citizens of Kapuskasing demonstrate their community pride by participating in the many facets of public life.
