Petrolia (2006 population 5,222) is a town in Ontario, Canada, near Sarnia, Ontario. It is billed as "Canada's Victorian Oil Town" and is often credited with starting the oil industry in North America. See the little known story of these amazing men at the PETROLIA DISCOVERY, a one-of-a-kind museum combining history and artifacts from the world's first Oil Industry within the framework of an original and still operational oilfield, established in the 1870s.Today, oil is still pumped in the Oil Springs and Petrolia fields by central power plants, some using distinctive jerker rods which reach out to each well just as they did over 100 years ago. The Petrolia Discovery is an operational historic oilfield located on 60 acres of this land in Lambton County's historic Oil Heritage Disctrict, which has been set aside as a living museum and a testament to Canada's oil pioneers. It contains museum-style exhibits, detailing the major historic contributions of these extrordinary men., alongside an ancient but still fully-functional oilfield where the visitor can see crude oil being drawn from the ground before their very eyes, exactly as it was being done in the 1800s.
Petrolia is home to Victoria Hall, a National Historic Site. Originally a fire hall, municipal office, police hall, jail and opera house, it was completed in 1889 for a total cost of $35 000. In January 1989, a fire caused extensive damage. It was subsequently restored, and re-opened in 1992. Currently it houses the town hall and Victoria Playhouse.
The Oil Heritage District Community Centre was opened in Petrolia in 2006, after twenty years of campaigning by the group "The Oil Heritage District Community Centre Association" which was started in 1985. It serves rural and town residents in central Lambton County.
Petrolia is a progressive industrial community, rich in Victorian architecture. The town is less than an hourâs drive west of London and about a half hourâs drive from Sarnia and the International Blue Water Bridge. Petrolia occupies a 12.7 square-kilometer stretch of land in the central region of Sarnia-Lambton. Petrolia Industrial Park offers serviced industrial land.
